The holiday experience during a pandemic

First off I just want to say everyone’s circumstances are totally different and it’s important for people to do what’s right for them as long as it’s safe for you and others to do so. As mentioned in previous blog posts I’ve had several trips cancelled this year so feel very grateful I was able to go abroad this year and have a lovely safe time.

I spent a week on the Greek Island Rhodes and honestly it’s safe to say they’re doing a much better job than the UK. I genuinely felt safer on my week away than I do walking round my local shopping centre! The island as a whole has had a really low rate of cases.

It was probably the quietest and calmest trip ever. The Airport only had essential shops open as well as one bar/restaurant. There were no queues at any point and everything was being cleaned after each person such as trays at security. Also masks had to be worn at all times apart from when sat eating or drinking. The same applies on our flight and honestly Jet2 did an amazing job in making sure the rules were followed throughout the flight which was great.

The rules set out by the Greek government meant masks had to be worn in any enclosed space such as, taxis, shops, lifts etc. There was a fine on anyone caught not wearing one when supposed to. Hand sanitiser was provided everywhere you went with intensive cleaning taking place frequently. Even the lifeguard wore a mask and disposable gloves all day sitting in 35°C. Also there was a midnight curfew which meant all bars and restaurants had to shut. Public gatherings were also at a maximum of 50 people.

For our restaurant in the hotel that was buffet style you had to wear your mask, hand sanitise and emerald disposable-gloves provided in the restaurant only taking them off once at your table and eating.

The filling in of forms needed to enter both Greece and returning to the UK was also a new experience. They aren’t too complicated it’s more just something new to get used to doing. When we landed at Rhodes Airport I was randomly picked to have a COVID-19 test and thankfully tested negative!

Obviously this is just a very quick overview but honestly couldn’t of been more grateful for a lovely and safe week away experiencing somewhere new! Every measure was taken from start to finish of the trip making sure all rules were followed to keep everyone safe and still enjoying their holiday.

It’s really important that when travelling in the ‘new normal’ that you are being considerate and making sure you’re doing everything you can to keep yourself and others safe! All while helping the aviation industry and local areas of the country where you are visiting. We’re still all in this together.
