New for 2020 – The Lockdown Birthdays

Another new experience and thing happening during these strange times are all the birthday ‘celebrations’ happening even with everyone stuck in their own homes. This weekend was both my mam and dads birthdays and was definitely the quietest birthday weekend my family has ever had.

Very thankful for the lovely weather meaning a very quiet BBQ. Definitely looking forward to celebrating properly when this is over by seeing how many restaurants we can eat at in 1 day haha. Of course the main thing is that as a family we’re together and healthy!

The Kissing Booth Book Series – Review

During lockdown I’ve finally had time to start reading more again and eventually got round to reading The Kissing Booth book series. I thought I would do a general overview of all of the books because 1) it’s one of my favourite series I’ve read 2) I don’t want to risk giving to much away about each book for people that haven’t read it yet and 3) I feel like I could go on forever haha.

So this review will be spoiler free because there’s nothing worse than having an ending ruined and be more so it gives you another reason as to why you should read these books.

What To Watch Recommendation

I know people are looking for things to watch and it’s starting to get to the point of lockdown where people are running out of ideas or things to do and fill in time. I thought I’d just do a little post about what I’ve enjoyed watching in case anyone was after something new to watch. I’ve finally had some time to catch up on some series I’ve been waiting to watch for ages.

One thing I’ve really enjoyed was catching up on the latest Simon Reeve’s documentary series that was originally shown on BBC2 at the end of last year. Simon Reeve: The America’s series documents his journey from the very top of Northern America right down through the USA, Central America and ending in South America.

I highly recommend watching any Simon Reeve documentary as I think he is one of the best! The first time I saw one was in my Global Development A Level class at college 7 years ago and it gave me such a new aspect on issues around the world. Unlike some other documentary makers it really comes across that Simon Reeve cares about the stories he’s showing and the people featured. He highlights issues within the documentaries in a way where you often see all sides making for really interesting viewing.

His travel documentaries are always one of my favourites to watch and find it a great way to see and learn about other parts of the world. It’s great particularly in times such as these to watch something educational but always really entertaining! Highly recommend!

DIY Face Mask

DISCLAIMER: I am in no way stating that this will help prevent coronavirus from spreading or you catching it. This is not medical advice. There is evidence for and against the use of masks linked to the environment you are in and the type of mask. It is important to listen to government advice and information from reliable sources such as the World Health Organisation.

I thought I’d just do a little post on how I made a diy face mask purely because some people might be interested in how to do it as they are in high demand. If nothing else it gives you something to do. I don’t even know if I’m going to need to wear it to be honest but I thought I’d rather have one and not use it, especially as more countries around the world are beginning to suggest wearing them. Also it might keep my face warm when queuing for the supermarket on a cold day haha.

Life in Lockdown: 1 month update

So for me as of yesterday I have been in ‘lockdown’ mode for 29 days. It turned out that way because of work and then the lockdown was announced all in a few days. So basically I just wanted to do a little post to document this time as it is so strange and fingers crossed it will never happen again.

To be honest I haven’t found lockdown that tough so far, everyone has good and bad days but that happens in general life too. I’ve missed doing normal day things and seeing family and friends but I’m grateful to be at home with my mam and dad and healthy. As mentioned in my last post I’ve been finding the time to enjoy things that sometimes we don’t have time to do I’m busy day to day life.

This is what I really wished it looked like.

When everything goes back to normal that we take away the little positives from this time such as making time to do things we enjoy, spending time with friends and family and not to take the simple things for granted!

UK lockdown is currently set to last another 3 weeks before being reviewed again, so there’s still plenty of time to take a step back and do what you can to stay positive at home. It’s also important to remember by sticking to the rules and by being mindful of situations this will end and we will be ok. Just take everything day by day because no one knows what’s happening or what to expect so we’re all in this together.

How to keep busy during lockdown

Everyone does their own thing and has their own way of dealing with situations which is great. However I know sometimes it can be a struggle to figure out what you need to or feel you should be doing whilst staying home and staying safe. There’s no right or wrong but I’ve seen so many posts of people saying they’re bored or don’t know how to fill in all of the spare time. So basically here’s a little list of things I think could hopefully help fill in some spare time if needed!

  • Watch TV – as in the film you’ve been desperate to see, the box set you’ve been trying to finish or the series everyone’s talking about
  • Exercise – fills in a bit of a your day and keeps you fit and healthy
  • Play games – either good old fashioned board games or on consoles
  • Read – finally find the time to finish a book
  • Tidy and clean – because you’ll never have as much time to spare as now to get all your jobs done
  • Video calls/Text – reach out to friends and enjoy spending time with family (in your household obviously)
  • Make your own list – write a list of things you need/want to do which can include some of the above so you never are at a loose end

At the end of the day we’re all in the same boat and any little things we can do to make the situation a bit easier has to be a good thing!

The cinema at home!

So I watch a lot of films anyway so it’s still part of my routine during lockdown at home. I really enjoy going to the cinema but also really enjoy watching films at home either on DVD, Sky, Netflix or downloading from ITunes. Lately I’ve been wanting to just watch films that are easy escapism and just having something to watch/have on in the background.

Now there’s no denying that sometimes a good kids film is all we need. Trolls:World Tour was due to be released in cinemas and had date changes a few times before Universal made the decision to release it on a new date as digital download. As far as I’m away this is the first time this has been done (don’t quote me) but I’m actually really interested in the film industry and behind the scenes so to me I feel like this is quite a moment for the industry. Obviously it’s due to extreme and unpredictable circumstances but the decision to move from ‘Box Office’ to home seems huge.

Disney Dogs Sketch Ambler Crossbody Bag by Dooney & Bourke

© Laura Merritt, 2020 (own photo).

I finally got one of my dream bags and it’s made me so happy! It might seem a bit random to ‘review’ a bag I haven’t actually used yet, but before buying I wanted to see and hear what other people thought of theirs and there wasn’t that many out there. So hopefully this could help someone out and if not you all now know how much I love my bag haha.

So for those who don’t know Dooney and Bourke are an American designer specialising in fine accessories. They are also really well known for their collaboration with Disney, they do regular collections, many of which are limited edition. You can only purchase the bags in the USA Parks or on the American shopDisney website.

Better Place

Just a little post about the silver linings in the strangest time ever. With last night being the 2nd Thursday that everybody across the UK went outside and showed our support for the NHS and all key workers doing amazing jobs and literally keeping the country going right now.

‪I think it’s so amazing to see how much people come together in the hardest of times! I genuinely think/hope the world will be a better place after everything ✨??❤️

In times like this it’s great to focus on the positives such as communities coming together, having time to do everything you never normally can do etc.

It’s such a challenging time, I hope people remember that while it might seem so hard right now it will end and life will return to normal. If anything I hope it will be even better then it was and people have learned during this time what’s really important and to be thankful for what you have. It’ll all be alright!

Onward Movie Review

I was unsure whether to do a movie review at first as the day after I went to see Pixar’s Onward all cinemas in the UK shut due to COVID-19. However I really enjoyed the film and it has now been released for digital download early in the US, so hopefully it will be available for people to see here earlier than planned too.

I had been looking forward to seeing this film although I didn’t know what to expect as I felt the trailer didn’t give lots of detail. But you know when a film starts with ‘from the makers of Coco and Toy Story’ it’s not going to disappoint. In summary the film is set in a magical land that has now changed to ‘modern life’ and follows a quest of two brothers trying to complete a spell to see their father one last time.
